New for 2016

The Impreza received a few updates for 2015, so for 2016 the only major change is the addition of Subaru’s Starlink™ Connected Services to the options list.

Introduction

Subaru is known for doing things a bit differently than other carmakers, and difference can often pay off. Just look at the 2016 Subaru Impreza. It seems like an ordinary compact car, but its standard all-wheel drive and low-mounted “boxer” engine give it drivability few cars in the segment can match. That capability--along with a list of smart features like Subaru’s EyeSight® safety system--make the Impreza worth consideration.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2016 Subaru Impreza may look like your typical compact, but like other Subarus, there is (much) more than meets the eye. Standard all-wheel drive provides confidence-inspiring traction in inclement weather, and better handling when the road is dry. And the Impreza features Subaru’s signature “boxer” engine configuration, which lowers the center of gravity for further handling improvements.

The Impreza uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic. While it doesn’t have any actual gears to speak of, the CVT does have a virtual “six-speed” manual-shifting mode for a bit of increased driver involvement.

With the manual transmission, the Impreza manages an impressive 28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 34 mpg highway),* but that rises to an even better 31 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway) with the CVT.* For buyers who feel they need all-wheel drive, but don’t need a vehicle the size of a crossover, the Impreza remains a good option.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Subaru Impreza is available as either a four-door, five-seat sedan, or a five-door hatchback. It’s offered in three trim levels, priced starting from $18,295.**

In addition to class-exclusive standard all-wheel drive, the base Impreza 2.0i comes with virtually everything you could want in a compact car. Other standard features include steering wheel Bluetooth and audio controls, 60/40 split-folding rear setback, an outside temperature gauge, and backup camera. There’s also a touchscreen infotainment system with 6.2-inch screen, HD Radio® capability, and Subaru’s Starlink® with Aha™ integration.

The 2.0i Premium includes all of the applicable standard features from the base model, plus 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear-suspension stabilizer bar. A standard All-Weather Package also includes two-stage heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and a windshield de-icer.

The top Impreza model is the Limited, and it’s only available with the five-door hatchback body style. It incorporates the applicable standard features from the other two models, and adds standard leather seats turn signals on the exterior mirrors, a color LCD display in the gauge cluster, welcome lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Subaru’s Starlink™ Connected Services.

In addition to the three main models, Subaru also offers a Sport trim package on the Premium and Limited five-door hatchbacks. This gives the Impreza a more aggressive look with features like 17-inch alloy wheels, body-color rocker panel spoilers, fog lights, roof rails, and unique seat fabric. Other optional features in the Impreza lineup include a moonroof, keyless access with pushbutton start, and an upgraded Starlink™ infotainment system with 7.0-inch screen.

Design

The Impreza doesn’t put on airs with its styling. Its exterior is simple and handsome, with styling cues borrowed from the larger Legacy and the rugged Outback wagon. The front fascia looks classy and upscale, and the beltline is also appreciably lower than other current compacts, making for greater outward visibility.

On the inside, the Impreza boasts a nicely styled interior that is tough enough to stand up to daily abuse. A 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system is also standard, while a 7.0-inch display and six-speaker audio system are available as an upgrade, along with navigation.

There’s also plenty of usable interior space. The Impreza rides on a 104.1-inch wheelbase, create plenty of room for passengers inside. Hatchback models also have 22.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 52.4 with the seats folded. Combined with the Impreza’s all-wheel drive, that makes for a package that’s a legitimate alternative to smaller crossovers, unless you just really like being high off the ground.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Subaru Impreza includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, as well as front, driver’s knee, front-side, and side-curtain airbags. The passenger seat front airbag features a central groove designed to expose the passenger to less impact force during deployment.

The Impreza also offers Subaru’s EyeSight® safety system as an option. It uses a windshield-mounted camera to detect obstacles, enabling both adaptive cruise control and automated low-speed emergency braking. Use of a camera instead of the radar-based systems favored by other carmakers allows Subaru to offer EyeSight® at a comparably lower price.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Subaru Impreza is a well-built, reliable, and efficient compact car. Add in its standard all-wheel drive, and the Impreza makes for a compelling option.
