Redefining the “hot hatch”

The Golf GTI is one of the most recognizable and enduring concepts in the Volkswagen lineup, combining adaptable comfort and versatility with jaw-dropping performance. The model defined the “hot hatch” class for U.S. audiences after debuting in 1983 and has received consistent adulation ever since.

Following its extensive redesign last year, the Golf GTI sees even more changes for 2016. Among the updates are a new infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®; a standard rearview camera; and an updated Driver Assistance Package expanded with the latest in driving tech.

Performance

At this point, the performance credentials hardly need explanation – but we’re happy to do so anyway. The compact turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI® introduced last year is part of the automaker’s third-generation EA888 family, the pinnacle of modern engine design. Engineered to be both lighter than the previous unit and to reduce friction, the engine is also remarkably compact.

With 210 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, there’s no question that the Golf GTI is thrilling to drive. The surprise is that it’s remarkably efficient, as well. With the six-speed manual transmission, the Golf GTI is rated at 25/34 city/hwy mpg.*

The available Performance Package modifies the engine programming for peak torque and horsepower, producing an extra 10 hp for a total of 220.

Features

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI is available in S, SE, and Autobahn trims in two-door or four-door versions, with pricing starting at $24,995.**

As with every Volkswagen model, the base Golf GTI comes incredibly well-equipped. Standard features include 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, LED foglights, heatable front seats, and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake, and shifter knob.

The Golf GTI also offers a suite a connectivity features through the standard MIB II Composition Media touchscreen infotainment system. MIB II features both USB and VW-Car Net® App-Connect functionality, so owners with corresponding systems can access select apps directly through the 6.5-inch display screen. A wealth of other options is available through VW Car-Net’s own connected vehicle services umbrella.

As the middle option in the Golf GTI range, the SE expands on the base features with additional technology and convenience, including a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. A Fender® Premium Audio system makes crooning along to your driving soundtrack that much more enjoyable, while leather seating surfaces further enhance the model’s innate luxury.

The top-of-the-line Golf GTI Autobahn (available only as a four-door model) includes all of the features from the lower trims plus a next-gen navigation system, 12-way power driver’s seat, and Climatronic automatic air conditioning.

A number of packages are available this year as well. The Driver Assistance Package has been updated with a number of new technologies, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, and Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist). The Lighting Package adds Bi-Xenon headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights and the Adaptive Front-lighting System.

Design

The performance and technology of the Golf GTI are matched only by its stellar design. Attractive on the outside and incredibly luxurious on the inside, it’s a hot hatch that delivers on all fronts.

The seventh-generation exterior recalls GTI classics from days gone by while offering a fun and distinctive take on previous generations. From the striking front end to the elegant character line running the length of the vehicle, each element delivers on the Volkswagen promise of timeless luxury.

The interior is driver-focused with an emphasis on comfort and convenience. Many of the controls have been repositioned for optimum ergonomics, while red ambient lighting and illuminated door sills contribute to the GTI’s premium performance personality. This is a vehicle that’s almost as much fun to ride in as it is to drive.

Safety

Standard safety features on the 2016 VW Golf GTI include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, and six airbags. Also standard is a post-collision braking system that automatically applies the brakes after an impact.

As previously mentioned, the Golf GTI can also be outfitted with an optional Driver Assistance package.

Verdict

Offering bold new innovations in both design and performance, the 2016 Golf GTI proudly carries on the legacy of the original hot hatch.
